VisibleWeb - Support - Errors

This page describes the error messages that can be produced by VisibleWeb.

There are a number of classes of error messages.

  1. Batch command file execution related.
  2. Messages that are generated prior to creating the report file.
  3. Messages that are listed within the body of the report file.

Error Messages relating to batch command file execution

The most common relate to typing errors which cause environment variables to be incorrectly set and so VisibleWeb is passed parameters that are not valid or cause it to operate differently than that intended. Patient careful checking and reference to the "Help" that is available for the operating system for the computer can resolve the majority of these problems.

"Out of environment space" error message

When a batch file is started or if a command prompt is used, an "Out of environment space" error message can occur. This is because the default space for environment variables on some Windows computers is 256 bytes by default and more environment variables are being set than can fit in 256 bytes.

    The solution is as follows:

    1. Right-click the MS-DOS Prompt shortcut.
    2. Click Properties.
    3. Click the Memory tab.
    4. In the Initial Environment box, increase the initial environment size.
This can be increased from 256 to 4,096 bytes, in 256-byte increments.
    5. Click OK

An alternative method is to edit the "Autoexec.bat" file to include any environment variables that need to be set. The computer then needs to be rebooted. The changes are incorporated into the Registry and the environment variable size is increased.

Error Messages prior to the creation of the report file

These messages start with VisibleWeb - Error - and are written to the system output (usually the batch command window). It is sometimes better to "pipe" these messages to a text file for later inspection.

    parameters expected

VisibleWeb was expecting more parameters than were supplied. The solution is to amend so that the correct number of parameters are supplied.

    missing report file name ...

VisibleWeb was expecting a valid report file name. In some cases an additional error message is generated which provides more information. Usual causes are the disk drive or path did not exist or was not accessible.

    processing report file ...

An error occured while processing the report file

VisibleWeb was expecting more parameters than were supplied. The solution is to amend so that the correct number of parameters are supplied.

Error Messages in the report file

VisibleWeb can generate a number of error and warning messages. These are written to the report file.

There are a number of circumstances such as "web page not found" where the server returns a "warning" page which is a valid web page. VisibleWeb does not detect this as an error as a valid web page has been retrieved.
