VisibleWeb - Download

This page allows VisibleWeb to be downloaded so that it can be tried before purchase. VisibleWeb is distributed as a Microsoft Windows compatible executable program and as a Java "jar" file.

Prior to downloading and running any program from WhyWaitForever please read and note the limitations and restrictions as described in the VisibleWeb software licence which is accessible through the "licence" link above.

Please take care to read the instructions below before downloading and installing. The installation procedure does not change any "Registry" or other inventory or system management information. Deinstallation is a simple matter of deleting all the items that were downloaded and installed.

Installation instructions

  1. The first stage is to check that an appropriate Java run-time environment is currently installed on your computer. The free program JavaCheck see below can be used for this purpose.

  2. Java run-time environments

VisibleWeb uses the Java programming language. Java programs need to be run within a Java run-time environment. Microsoft, Sun and IBM are suppliers of Java software. These companies and others provide Java run-time environments which cater for a wide range of computers and operating systems.

Many users of the Microsoft Internet Explorer web browser install the Java run-time environment when the browser is installed. WhyWaitForever Java programs can use this environment without requiring an additional Java run-time environment to be installed.

Users who are familiar with Java can select to install more extensive versions of the Java run-time environment.

      • VisibleWeb requires version 1.1.4 or later.
      • VisibleWeb requires version 1.3.0 or later for https processing.

    JavaCheck

JavaCheck is a free program from WhyWaitForever which can be downloaded and run and which writes the vendor and version of Java installed.

This program should be run in a MS-DOS Prompt Command Window. It should produce output similar to the following:

    WhyWaitForever - JavaCheck [Java vendor:Microsoft Corp. version:1.1.4]

WhyWaitForever - JavaCheck [Java vendor:Sun Microsystems Inc. version:1.1.8]

WhyWaitForever - JavaCheck [Java vendor:Sun Microsystems Inc. version:1.3.1]

If the JavaCheck does not produce output such as that listed above a Java run-time enviroment needs to be installed. Microsoft, Sun and IBM provide information on obtaining and installing a Java run-time environment appropriate to your computer.

Download as a Microsoft executable program (jcheck.exe)

Download jcheck.exe (by right clicking and using the "Save Target As" option).

      1. Store in a temporary folder such as "c:\temp".
      2. Launch the MS-DOS command prompt window ("command.com")
      3. Enter "c:\temp\jcheck.exe" on the prompt command line.
      4. Check that the output written is similar to that listed above.

Download as a Java jar file (jcheck.jar)

Download jcheck.jar (by right clicking and using the "Save Target As" option).

      1. Store in a temporary folder such as "c:\temp".
      2. Move the jar file to your directory of Java jars.
      3. Run the Java class "com.whywaitforever.JavaCheck". See examples below.
      4. Check that the output written is similar to that listed above.

"Out of environment space" error message

When a batch file is started or if a command prompt is used, an "Out of environment space" error message can occur. This is because the default space for environment variables on some Windows computers is 256 bytes by default and more environment variables are being set than can fit in 256 bytes.

      The solution is as follows:

      1. Right-click the MS-DOS Prompt shortcut.
      2. Click Properties.
      3. Click the Memory tab.
      4. In the Initial Environment box, increase the initial environment size.
This can be increased from 256 to 4,096 bytes, in 256-byte increments.
      5. Click OK

An alternative method is to edit the "Autoexec.bat" file to include any environment variables that need to be set. The computer then needs to be rebooted. The changes are incorporated into the Registry and the environment variable size is increased.

  3. The second stage is to create an environment for VisibleWeb and to download and install VisibleWeb.

  4. Downloads

      VisibleWeb comprises the following downloads.

      1. wwfe.zip - folder structure and files. This "zip" file contains all files except the executable programs or the Java jar files. Companies such as Winzip supply utility programs to zip and unzip files.
This file needs to be unzipped prior to downloading the program or jar file.

      2. vw.exe - VisibleWeb as a Microsoft Windows executable program.
This should be saved to c:\wwfe\bin.

      3. vw.jar - VisibleWeb Java classes as a "jar" file.
This should be saved to c:\wwfe\jar.

    Folder and file structure

It is a good idea to create a single folder (directory) to keep all the items associated with WhyWaitForever products together and to keep all items associated with VisibleWeb in a single directory. This simplifies the process of backup, recovery and deinstallation

The unzip process requires the user to select the disk drive and folder to which the structure will be unzipped. Usually the c: drive and root folder are selected. The unzip program continues as follows:

      1. Create the WhyWaitForever folder with a name of "wwfe". The path for this folder should be c:\wwfe.

      2. Create the program folder with a name of "bin" within the WhyWaitForever folder. This folder contains all executable programs within the WhyWaitForever family of products. The path for this folder should be c:\wwfe\bin.

      3. Create the VisibleWeb folder with a name of "vw" within the WhyWaitForever folder. This folder contains all Java jar files within the WhyWaitForever family of products. The path for this folder should be c:\wwfe\vw.

      4. Create all the other folders and unzip all files. Support - Folders describes the folders and files used by VisibleWeb.

    Environment Configuration

A number of files are able to be edited using a simple text editor such as Notepad.

      1. setj118.bat and similar located in c:\wwfe\vw\sys\cmd should be edited to reflect which version of Java has been installed and the folder where the Java environment is located. If the Microsoft Windows executable program version is only to be used these files do not need to be edited.

      2. licence.bat and similar located in c:\wwfe\vw\sys\cmd should be edited to change "######" to the password supplied by WhyWaitForever after payment received has been confirmed. VisibleWeb works with restrictions if a valid password is not supplied.

    Download check procedure

A batch command file downok.bat located in c:\wwfe\vw\sys\tutor can be run as a confidence check.

      REM downok.bat WhyWaitForever 16 April 2001
      REM
REM This command file runs VisibleWeb without parameters.
      REM

REM Set the home disk and directory
      c:
      cd c:\wwfe\vw

      REM Set the program location
      set progexe=c:\wwfe\bin\vw.exe

      REM Run the program
      %progexe%

The output from this batch command file should be:

WhyWaitForever - VisibleWeb - Error - parameters expected

It is recommended that a number of the tutorial batch command files should be run to become familiar with the product. Support - Tutorial describes a series of batch command files which cover the major features of VisibleWeb.

Deinstallation instructions

  1. Delete all items that have been installed.
