US Newspapers
The United States does not have a major national heavyweight newspaper. It has numerous city newspapers with perhaps the New York Times being the closest to a national paper. To an English eye the layout and tone of the newspapers seems at times to be quite old fashioned. Papers appear to take pains to separate reports from comment and editorial. Impartiallity is not seen as a utopian dream impossible to achieve. Echoes perhaps of the US founding fathers optimistic desires.

In England an article might be headed "George talks down pound" which contains both the report and the snarling, biting aggressive editorial view of the paper. In the US there might be two articles "George speaks on the pound" and "Geoge influences pound direction". At first view the US approach is attractive but and it is an important but the US papers consiously or otherwise are influenced by advertisers, consensus and external influences just as much as are their counterparts in England. Partiallity in the US is cloaked by publishing artifice and convention. In England the partiallity of newspapers is open, acknowledged and understood. Read an English newspaper and the battleflags are proudly trooped.
