The United States does not have a major national heavyweight newspaper. It has numerous city newspapers with perhaps the New York Times being the closest to a national paper. To an English eye the layout and tone of the newspapers seems at times to be quite old fashioned. Papers appear to take pains to separate reports from comment and editorial. Impartiallity is not seen as a utopian dream impossible to achieve. Echoes perhaps of the US founding fathers optimistic desires.

Partiallity in the US is cloaked by publishing artifice and convention. In England the partiallity of newspapers is open, acknowledged and understood. Read an English newspaper and the battleflags are proudly trooped.
